Land Acknowledgement
We are Treaty People.
We are party to the relationships and agreements
That have shaped the story of this land,
And the stories of all who call it 'home'.
None of us are uninvolved.
This land has a history.
Pre-contact, the land Westminster stands on was an area that was lived on by the Anishinaabe People. At various times after settlers arrived it was lived on by the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, the Petun, and the Attawandaron Peoples.
Westminster stands on Treaty 19, the ancestral and contemporary lands of the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg.
We recognize that the history of this land has been marred by brokenness:
Broken promises,
Broken trust,
Broken dishes and broken spoons,
Broken relationships between settlers and the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples whose ancestors have always called this place 'home'.
We confess and we grieve the role that the United Church of Canada has played in this brokenness. We seek to understand and to atone.
Because just as this land has a history,
This land has a future.
At Westminster we work and we hope
For healing,
For reconciliation,
For deeper relationship with the land and with its First Peoples—
Because we are Treaty People and People of God.
